Magic: The Gathering Arena Will Not Feature Cards From 'The List' in Zendikar Rising

Last Saturday, Magic: The Gathering head designer Mark Rosewater announced a new type of booster pack for the upcoming set Zendikar Rising, and it's called the Set Booster. Compared to the traditional Draft Booster, Set Boosters have a different mix of cards you can find: only 14 cards in them, but only 12 are guaranteed to be MTG cards unlike the Draft Booster, which contains 15. However, there's a higher chance players can get up to four Mythic Rares or Rares in each pack, but of course, Rosewater confirmed that it will cost more than a regular booster pack.

The Set Booster will have an art print card and an advertisement/token card, or a 25% chance of a Magic card from "The List", which is a reserve group of 300 reprints from past MTG sets. Rosewater already revealed three of the cards from The List: Muscle Sliver, Cloudgoat Ranger, and Pact of Negation. The cards are from "anywhere in Magic's 27-year history." The reprints will feature the same frame and set symbol they were originally printed in, but the Set Booster versions will have a set symbol.

Sadly, Magic: The Gathering Arena players won't be getting cards from the Zendikar Rising Set Booster List. Rosewater explained the reason why: "On tabletop Magic, The List doesn't affect format legality, but on MTG Arena it would add these cards to Historic. While some cards from The List may eventually make their way to Historic, we want to be a bit more purposeful on MTG Arena when adding new cards."

It's likely that the cards from The List would make a huge impact on MTG Arena's Historic format if they decided to add it, so it's understandable that they would not add it digitally to the game, but expect many of them to eventually be added to Arena.

Zendikar Rising is set to release on September 25, 2020, and September 17 digitally.
