Zack Snyder has always been viewed by many as a true visionary but there's no denying that he's faced a few hurdles here and there when it comes to his projects.

Of course, his time in the DC Extended Universe is one thing that immediately comes to mind but some of you may not know that Snyder also once explored the prospect of doing a Star Wars film.

His pitch was later reworked, picked up by Netflix, and is now called Rebel Moon. Now, Snyder is opening up about his supposed Star Wars film and why Lucasfilm had to turn it down.

Speaking with Empire, the former DC director shared new details about his failed attempt at making a Star Wars film project. Turns out, Snyder had the idea long before the sequels were actually a thing and wanted to create an R-rated film featuring new characters.

He explained: "The sale [of Lucasfilm to Disney] had just happened," he said. "There was that window where, you know, who knows what's possible? I was like, 'I don’t want any of your characters. I don't want to do anything with any known characters, I just want to do my own thing on the side.'"

Snyder admits that his ambitious plans wouldn't have been greenlit by Disney. "And originally I was like, 'It should be rated R!' That was almost a non-starter. I knew it was a big ask, to be honest. But the deeper I got into it, I realized it was probably never going to be what I wanted."

Disney operated differently over a decade ago and considering it's been wary of its family-friendly image, there was absolutely no chance Lucasfilm would have greenlit his Star Wars pitch without it being heavily tweaked.

Thankfully, Snyder still found a home on Netflix and we're hopeful Rebel Moon actually becomes a smash hit.

Rebel Moon is set to release on Netflix on December 22, 2023.
