Star Wars fans might have been hoping that Lucasfilm might touch more on the Star Wars Expanded Universe after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, however, it seems like President Kathleen Kennedy is unsure that the films following Star Wars sequel trilogy will touch upon any of the Legend stories.
Kennedy just recently spoke in an interview with Rolling Stone to help promote The Rise of Skywalker, and in her discussion with the entertainment news outlet, the Lucasfilm President couldn't help but touch upon the future of the franchise.
Though the producer doesn't outright dismiss the possibility of adapting some of the Star Wars Expanded Universe's elements to the big screen, Kennedy says fans shouldn't really expect too much because there isn't any extensive library of canon adventures that can be translated into a direct live-action movie.
"Every one of these movies is a particularly hard nut to crack," Kennedy explained during the interview, "There's no source material. We don't have comic books. We don't have 800-page novels. We don't have anything other than passionate storytellers who get together and talk about what the next iteration might be. We go through a really normal development process that everybody else does. You start by talking to filmmakers who you think exhibit the sensibilities that you're looking for."
While some Star Wars fans might reason that there are a whole lot of books and comic book stories in Star Wars Legends to choose from, Kennedy probably means that there isn't one consistent, canonical timeline for Lucasfilm to take its stories from.
Still, we imagine that the Lucasfilm Story Group already has a lot of stories on hand, and they can take a lot of different elements from the Expanded Universe in forging the future of the Star Wars franchise.
