Hadley and Oliver meet at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport on December 20 after Hadley misses her flight.

They end up getting along very well, and later on in the plane, due to a broken seatbelt, Oliver is transferred to the seat beside Hadley. So, they talk all night, and the chemistry is clear.

Unfortunately, they get separated at the customs line and have no means of contacting each other as Hadley’s phone dies. But fate appears to be on their side.

During her father’s wedding, Hadley overhears some guests talking about a memorial service in Peckham. Hadley realizes that they could be referring to Oliver’s mother.

So, she goes straight to Peckham. She meets Oliver’s family, and finally, Oliver shows up. They talk about Oliver’s situation, and Hadley asks why he prefers explaining things in numbers rather than saying something honest.

Hadley adds that Oliver is just pretending that he isn’t bothered by what’s going on around him. This offends Oliver, and he says that he doesn’t want to “spill his guts out on some girl he just met on a plane.”

This hurts Hadley, so she decides to leave. The Narrator then appears at the moment Oliver almost “walks away from the love of his life.” She gives him Hadley’s bag, but Oliver is conflicted about whether he should go after her.

As the Narrator explains in the film, “Fate can only be fate if we decide that we want it to be.” So, what does Oliver choose? Does he go after Hadley?

Yes, Hadley and Oliver end up together and get a happy ending (or should we say “beginning”?). Oliver goes to the wedding of Hadley’s father and expresses his feelings.

He explains that he’s always been afraid of surprises – he’s scared of being caught off-guard by things like cancer or heartbreak, which is why he chooses to live by statistics. They kiss, and Oliver shares that he’s been researching about “the statistical probability of love at first sight.”

In the book, things end with the kiss and their conversation, and it’s up to the readers to make their own conclusions as to what will happen next.

However, the movie’s ending is quite specific, as the Narrator tells us what happens next: they will kiss 12,872 times, they’ll be married 58 years and have a daughter, they will have 1,462 arguments, and make love 5,787 times.

Hadley will hold Oliver’s hand when his mother dies, and Oliver will hold Hadley’s when she takes her last breath.

The Narrator ends by saying that all of those things would not have been possible were it not for a missed flight, a broken seat belt, and a choice to love each other every day.
