Logan was probably one of the biggest superhero movies to come out this year, and though it had us say goodbye to Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, we did get introduced to his badass female clone, Laura a.k.a. X-23. As it turns out, a spinoff for Laura is in the works, and Mangold has confirmed that he's working on the script.
Talking to THR, Mangold talks about Wonder Woman and its influence to have Fox make their own female-centric superhero movie. He explains:
"[Patty Jenkins'] success with [Wonder Woman] only solidifies more for studios that there's less to fear with a female protagonist… The more that keeps getting hit home, that ends up giving me more space turning around and going, 'Well here we are with a female protagonist. That's incredible. And what are we going to do with her?' And that's where we are with that [the Laura script] right now, dreaming."
With Fox trying to steadily branch out its X-Men universe, producer Hutch Parker explains how the X-23 spinoff would not exactly copy Logan in its tone but try to find its own genre. Parker says:
"Yes, there are other facets of that character and some others potentially to explore in their own way… It may not be in the same exact tonality or with the same genre orientations as Logan, but I think part of what has been opened up in this universe to all of us now is, drawing on different genre traditions, there are new pathways to be opened for new characters that populate this universe."
Though I would definitely love to see Dafne Keen come back as Laura, I'd also be happy to see Fox cast someone a lot older for a teen X-23. Plus, they could always have Keen come back and do something bad ass in a flashback. Then again, if there's no rush to pump out the film, maybe they can just wait for Keen to reach the right age and cast her as a teen X-23; you have to love how intense her eyes can get in a film.
No release date has been set for the X-23 spinoff, but the movie is definitely in the works.
