Live-Action Avatar the Last Airbender to Begin Production Soon

It's been a while since a live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender has been announced by Netflix, but we haven't got any significant updates since then. What's good is, we at least have an idea on when production is set to begin.

According to Discussing Film, production for the show is set to begin later this year. If we follow this development, we could be looking at a release of the series sometime around late 2020 or early 2021.

Everyone remembers the travesty that was M. Night Shymalan's The Last Airbender, but fans should be pleased to know that original showrunners Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko are attached as developers of the series. The original show's head writer Aaron Ehasz might not be involved though, as he's working on his own show for Netflix, The Dragon Prince.

Personally, I would have preferred if the series just gave us the story of a whole new Avatar, maybe the one who came after Korra or someone else. I'm afraid that the live-action story will have this heavy shadow cast on it by the animated series, and I don't expect the CGI budget to catch up to the kind of effects we got with full animation.

Then again, I could be worrying about nothing. Maybe Konietzko and DiMartino have something special planned with this live-action version. I guess all we can really do now is wait.

No release date has been set for Netflix's live Avatar: The Last Airbender.
