Lin Manuel Miranda Talks Live-Action Little Mermaid; Top Secret Animated Project

Lin Manuel Miranda is super hyped about working on the live-action remake of Disney's The Little Mermaid and what's more, he's working on a top-secret animated movie, Vulture reports. Miranda is best known for his hit musical Hamilton, but he's recently gotten involved in several Disney projects. He's working on Disney's Moana and has a role in the upcoming Mary Poppins remake.

Miranda is deeply in love with original 1989 animated The Little Mermaid. He even named his son Sebastian after a character in the movie. "I'm intimidated," he said about working on the live-action movie. "This came out of a conversation with Disney, and basically they were like, 'There's no bigger fan of this movie than you, and no bigger public supporter."

Though it's been said that Miranda's role in the project is co-production and song composistion, he says exactly what he's doing for the movie is still up in the air. "We're in super-early talks — I literally don't have a title for what my job on The Little Mermaid is yet," he says. "Right now, it's the guy who wears the 'don't mess it up' hat. If I could sign a contract with that job title on it, that would be great! But that's sort of where we are."

Whatever his job happens to be, Miranda is all-in. "If this requires new music, I'm here for that, and if this requires me weighing in on who makes this thing, I'm here for that. If this requires me just saying, 'That doesn't look like it's underwater,' I'm even here for that! It's going to be a huge challenge to not make it feel uncanny valley–ish."

Miranda also divulged that he's working with Zootopia director Byron Howard on a "top secret" animated film. Miranda is excited about the film but warns that it could take several years to make, and they're just getting started. ""We literally haven't gotten in the room yet," he said, "but we're plotting."
