Lin-Manuel Miranda Spotlights in New Image from Mary Poppins Returns

December is usually a big month for movies, and since we don't have any Star Wars films coming, Disney is gearing up for the release of Mary Poppins Returns. Updates on the film have been steady and slow, and just now we have a new image courtesy of Empire (via The DisInsider).

This time around, Emily Blunt will be taking over the role that was made iconic by Julie Andrews. The spotlight in the photo is on Lin-Manuel Miranda who is playing a new character called Jack the lamplighter—no doubt a fill-in role for Dick Van Dyke's Bert from the first Mary Poppins.

Besides Miranda and Blunt, the movie also has an impressive cast assembled which includes the likes of Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Angela Lansbury, and Julie Walters. Dick Van Dyke is even coming back to play the role of Mr. Dawes Jr.; in the first film, he played the role of Mr. Dawes Sr. under the alias of Navckid Keyd.

Here's the official synopsis for the movie:

In Depression-era London, a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, along with Michael's three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.

Mary Poppins Returns comes out Dec. 19, 2019.
