Leave the World Behind is one of the most controversial films to have come out on Netflix this year. Apart from the unanswered ending, there were some hidden gems throughout the film. One of them was spotted on the Leave the World Behind map by viewers.
After spotting the hidden QR code, some viewers turned to Twitter to share their discovery. So where does the QR code lead to and what is its significance to the film?
Where Can You Find the Hidden QR Code in Leave the World Behind Map?
One Reddit user shared his observation of the hidden QR code in the teaser of the film. At that time, it was unclear what this hidden gem was.
So when the film was released, those who watched it immediately spotted the QR code on the Leave the World Behind map.
The scene that shows the map is the news report about the cyberattack happening in the US. According to the Redditor, the QR code covers part of Kentucky.
Where Does the QR Code Lead To?
So where does the QR code lead to? The answer is the abandoned Lake Shawnee Amusement Park, which was pointed out by this tweet.
This abandoned amusement park opened in 1926 and operated for 62 years. It closed in 1988 after the numerous urban legends that ruined its reputation.
There were also a total of six accidental deaths in the amusement park, with a little girl who died on the swings as well as a young boy who drowned in the pond. Many believed the park was haunted because it was opened on "cursed land."
Eventually, the amusement park was abandoned.
Is There a Significance to This Hidden QR Code?
Avid fans of the writer/director, Sam Esmail, were not shocked to find this hidden gem. They've gotten used to Esmail's fondness for sprinkling his films/shows with hidden gems/easter eggs.
Esmail's famous creation, Mr. Robot, has numerous hidden gems. The only way you can discover most of them is by re-watching the series.
The easter eggs in Mr. Robot have always been more tech-savvy. These have filled several episodes of the series with lines of code, QR codes, hostnames, bar codes, IP addresses, or just about any number.
And as it turns out, this isn't Esmail's doing, but that of his assistant, Kor Adana.
Adana told Vulture:
"I wanted to give the viewer as much control of this story as possible, and have them really feel like they are a part of this narrative. You can log on to these sites, and then recreate and relive some of the hacks you see on the show. You can solve problems, and find codes hidden in the source code, or you can take answers from different Easter eggs and put them together, which will lead you somewhere else. It might give you a little bit of a hint for what is to come in the story. And usually, it doesn’t stop at the first page. Even if it is an ad for something, or if it is a very simple page, there is something else on that page that will lead you somewhere else."
Interestingly, Adana is not linked with Leave the World Behind so it's possible that the director added the hidden QR code as a nod to Adana's work in Mr. Robot.
