Kung Fu Hustle 2 is Officially Happening

2004's Kung Fu Hustle remains to be a cult classic and is probably one of the most hilarious kung fu films ever made. What's interesting is, after more than a decade of waiting, a sequel is actually in the works with Stephen Chow returning to direct.

During a recent promo interview for his next film The New King of Comedy (via MAAC), Chow confirms that he'll be working on a follow-up to Kung Fu Hustle after he finishes work on a sequel to Mermaid. It's also worth noting that the film will also not focus on Stephen Chow's Sing, but will follow a whole new story set in the modern day. Chow, however, has said that it's possible that he'll make a cameo.

The original movie is actually set in the 1940s, so it's curious what would happen if you take the concept of Kung Fu Hustle and place it in the modern day. No doubt we'll still get some crazy kung fu sequences complete with signature fighting styles. Is there a chance that we'll also get involvement from the Axe Gang as well? How about a return to Pigsty Alley?

Just for a small refresher, check out the amazing fight scene between The Beast and the Landlords:

Kung Fu Hustle definitely shines with its action comedy, and the sequences still hold up to this day. Besides the callbacks from classic Bruce Lee films, there's clearly also a lot of influence from anime, what with the silly powers and escalating skill of each new fighter.

No release date has been set for the Kung Fu Hustle sequel.
