Sony has been working on the Kraven the Hunter film which would be the next entry in their Spider-Man Universe franchise. However, just like the Venom films and Morbius, it is expected that it will have some changes to the character since he is not going to serve as an adversary of Spider-Man. But what kind of changes are they going to do the character? As it turns out, it is a massive one.
As reported by Variety, during the CineEurope conference in Barcelona, Aaron Taylor-Johnson went on stage to promote his upcoming film Bullet Train as well as the Kraven the Hunter film that he is starring in which he revealed that it just recently wrapped production.
Taylor-Johnson described his character as "one of Marvel’s most iconic, notorious anti-heroes — Spider Man’s number one rival" and shared his excitement about how he is "not an alien, or a wizard. He’s just a hunter, a human with conviction."
However, in total contrast to the character's personality in the comics, the actor confirmed that Kraven the Hunter is going to be "an animal lover and a protector of the natural world" in the film and called him a "very, very cool character." He also added that they shot the film entirely on location.
While we might have expected that they will make some changes to the character, it is jarring to hear that Sony's take on Kraven is going to be very different, especially with the "animal lover" description which is dissimilar to the comics since he is known for wearing lion pelt in his costume and is not really known to be an admirer of animals due to his hunting nature.
To be fair, we still need to give the filmmakers a chance and see if their take on the character is still going to be good despite the massive changes. For now, let's just wait for its first trailer and find out if these changes really work and if he still has the known characteristics that we know in the comics.
Kraven the Hunter is set to be released in theaters on January 13, 2023.
