Despite the film’s star power, the live-action Saint Seiya movie significantly underperformed at the box office. In fact, the new Knights of the Zodiac has done worse than Dragonball Evolution.

After opening in US cinemas last week, the live-action Saint Seiya movie’s box office results didn’t even reach the USD 1 million mark.

On top of the poor box office numbers, the film also got negative reviews as it sits at a rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes.

As reported by Box Office Mojo, Knights of the Zodiac only earned USD 535,000 at the domestic box office during its opening weekend.

On its own, over 500k might seem a lot, but this is an astronomically low number for most action movies, especially in the US.

After all, the biggest box office hits have openings in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

During its opening weekend, the film was screened in 586 theaters. In total, the film’s opening weekend box office results meant that it only ranked 11th place.

For comparison, the Dragonball Evolution movie, an infamous live-action film among anime fans, recorded a USD 4.8 million haul during its opening weekend in the US back in 2009. At that time, that was already a low number.

This live-action Dragon Ball film was critically panned and was not at all a commercial hit.

Now, the Mackenyu-led Knights of the Zodiac might suffer the same fate.

Following its opening in US cinemas, the movie’s early reviews were mostly mixed or negative.

Now, a couple more reviews have been released, and they’re still far from positive.

Currently, the movie has a 33% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 12 reviews.

Many of the reviews criticized the film’s writing and CGI. Some are even comparing its quality to Dragonball Evolution.

Aside from reviews, there were also fans on Twitter that shared their negative experience with the movie, with some even reporting that screenings were being canceled due to low interest.

Of course, there’s still a chance that the film can make a return on its budget from the worldwide box office results. But given the initial results, things aren’t looking good in that regard.

Knights of the Zodiac is currently screening in select US cinemas.

Meanwhile, the original Saint Seiya anime is also available now on Crunchyroll.
