George R.R. Martin recently opened up about how the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be different from the main series.

Last month, it was announced that HBO is officially moving forward with a new Game of Thrones prequel based on the Dunk and Egg books titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight.

The series will follow the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg set around a century before the events of Game of Thrones. Martin serves as the co-writer and executive producer.

In his recent blog post, Martin shared an update on the pre-production of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, which is set to begin filming this summer.

He also explained how the new prequel will be different from the main Game of Thrones series.

"The Hedge Knight will be a lot shorter than Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon, with a much different tone… but it’s still Westeros, so no one is truly safe. [Showrunner] Ira Parker and his team are doing a great job," he wrote.

In terms of the plans for the subsequent seasons, Martin revealed which other books in the Dunk and Egg series of novellas will be tackled if the show's premiere next year becomes a success.

"The show will make its debut next year… and if it does well, The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight will follow," Martin added.

"By which time I hope to have finished some more Dunk and Egg stories (yes, after I finish The Winds of Winter)."

While we don't know yet what "different tone" they are planning for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, it is an intriguing tease since it sets up a certain expectation for fans who are looking forward to the series.

Perhaps the series will have a lighter tone compared to the other installments in the franchise while still being an epic fantasy that we usually expect in a Game of Thrones show.
