Kevin Smith Says Star Wars: Episode IX Is Bringing Its Own Endgame

There's a lot of anticipation building up over Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Not only is the film set to close Lucasfilm's sequel trilogy, but it's also going to serve as the culmination of the entire Skywalker saga. That's 40 years of Star Wars on the big screen.

That's why it shouldn't really come as a surprise to fans when filmmaker and pop culture connoisseur Kevin Smith compares the film with Avengers: Endgame. Taking to social media after Lucasfilm released a brand new trailer for The Rise of Skywalker on Good Morning America on Monday, director Kevin Smith couldn't help but gush over the footage.

"Since ‘77, @starwars has been the love of my pop-cultural life. So when I saw that sea of Star Destroyers, I felt like a kid again. It's like JJ said to the @Avengers ‘I've got an Endgame too!'"

In a way, The Rise of Skywalker is building up very much to be like Endgame. The Avengers: Infinity War sequel proved to be Marvel's biggest film of the year. Not only did the movie close Joe and Anthony Russo's two-part Avengers movie, but it also culminated the entire Marvel franchise, bringing in the big guns with the time heist and with the climactic battle between the Avengers and the armies of Thanos (Josh Brolin).

Like Endgame, Lucasfilm's Episode IX is expected to bring in some serious kaching to Disney, though the film will probably have a bit of difficulty in foreign markets like China.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set to premiere on December 20, 2019.
