After being built up for years, Thanos' confrontation with the Avengers during Infinity War was definitely worth it. He ran roughshod on the heroes we know and love, making the Hulk a sad coward and killing half of Thor's people, just to name a few of the bad things he has done. This has made a lot of people say that he's the best villain in the MCU and Marvel head Kevin Feige may have just confirmed this.
During an interview that was in Marvel Studios: The First 10 Years (via ComicBook.com), Feige discussed how they built up the Mad Titan for six years and how important the character is. There's no doubt that the character is important as he was the focal point of Avengers: Infinity War, with many even claiming that he's the protagonist of that film.
Feige then does something bold and claims that Thanos is the greatest villain of their movies. He's definitely the most important villain in the MCU thus far and that fact that Thanos ended up winning, in the end, shows just how dedicated Marvel was to build up his character. Some might say that Killmonger, Vulture, and maybe even Loki are better villains but Thanos should be in the running of that list.
"Thanos has been lurking in the shadows with a desire to obtain these Infinity Stones, which has played a big part in our other films. We've introduced the Tesseract, revealed to be the Space Stone; the Mind Stone, which came out of Loki's scepter and then went into Vision's forehead; and the Time Stone: the Eye of Agamotto that Doctor Strange wears is an Infinity Stone itself! And ofcoursethe Guardians dealt with the Power Stone. So these storytelling devices that we've seeded into every film will continue to play a part and come together. We've been teasing this for six years. That's a long time to tease something cinematically before paying it off. Thanos has to be the greatest villain in our movies."
Most of us are expecting Thanos' happy ending to be ripped away from him by the end of Avengers 4, though we don't know for sure. Then again, we do know that Spider-Man will be alive and kicking, so expect a number of other heroes to come back as well, but with a cost.
Avengers 4 comes out on May 3, 2019.
