Kevin Feige on What the DCEU Can Learn From Richard Donner's Superman

Say what you will about Kevin Feige or the MCU but it's clear that they know how to make good superhero blockbuster movies. The same can't really be said for Warner Bros. DCEU since it only has one genuinely good movie in Wonder Woman and a number of other movies that are clearly having an identity crisis.

During a press junket for Ant-Man and The Wasp, Feige was asked about how the DCEU can get back on track. Feige gave a fairly interesting answer, saying that Richard Donner's classic Superman movie is still the paradigm that all superhero movies should follow.

"I always hesitate to come off as the person who is bestowing advice on people. It's not really what I do. What I do know is, they're great characters. I'm not shy about saying, Richard Donner's Superman, I still think, is the paradigm by which we all still should follow. It's all there."

Fans often bring up Superman or Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy when discussing good DC films and how the DCEU clearly learned the wrong lessons from the latter. Choosing to go dark for the sake of being different without a clear message was always the downfall of Batman V Superman, which still has defenders thanks to the much-praised Ultimate Edition.

At least Man of Steel, for all it's faults, told a story and was easy to follow. It didn't need an Ultimate Edition and neither does Wonder Woman.

With the DCEU expected to go in a new direction soon, it will be interesting to see if they use Superman as a paradigm like Feige suggests. They can choose to emulate it or go against it but it's clear that the film should be important to DC and Warner Bros.
