Kevin Feige and Scarlett Johansson Explain the Long Wait for a Black Widow Solo Film

Scarlett Johansson made her debut as Natasha Romanoff back in 2010. As the character's presence grew over the course of a handful of films, the thought of the hero getting a solo movie was seemingly unlikely. However, after almost a decade of playing the role, Johansson will star in Black Widow to be released a few months from now. Now, Marvel chief creative officer Kevin Feige explains why it took quite a while to make this happen.

Feige and Johansson actually discussed a potential solo film back in 2012 during a tour for The Avengers as a "tiny speck of an idea." "We had been planning the conclusion for the Infinity Saga for the past five or six years," Feige told EW. "And Natasha's journey within those films took the priority." He says the "notion" for making a stand-alone film that is set in the past for a character that fans already know "didn't feel right."

When the press and the fans were repeatedly asking Johansson about having a solo film, the actress admits that she was quite unsure of making a Black Widow movie. "I was like, ‘I think I'm good,'" she said. "If we [were] going to do this, it had to be creatively fulfilling." Johansson pointed out that she has been working for a "long time" now and she has to feel like she's "challenged." The actress admits she wouldn't want to do the "same thing" she has already done before in previous movies.

Johansson also mentioned how her character isn't the only one who has changed over the decade, she did too. "This film is very much a result of that journey, my own personal journey," she added. "I feel that I probably wasn't as willing or able to go to the kind of uncomfortable, embarrassing, ugly places before. I think it's just as you get older, you trust yourself more."
