Kate Winslet Joins Avatar Sequels

Avatar 2 has just begun principal photography a few weeks ago and it looks like the production's been bringing in some new faces into the science fiction film series. The English Academy Award-winning actress Kate Winslet has been added to the Avatar sequels' roster, joining actors from the original film like Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Stephen Lang, and Sigourney Weaver.

Deadline broke the news today, reporting that Winslet had been cast to play the role of a character named Ronal. Though the publication didn't specify whether the character is one of the humans or the Na'vi in the Avatar follow-ups, we're excited to learn more about Ronal and the role she's going to play in the film.

Speaking with the publication, director James Cameron decided to speak about the casting.

"Kate and I have been looking for something to do together for 20 years since our collaboration on Titanic, which was one of the most rewarding of my career. I can't wait to see her bring the character of Ronal to life."

News about Cameron's casting comes as a surprise to her fans. While the actress did have a supporting role in the Divergent films, Cameron tends to go for roles in more serious dramas, like The Reader and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It's definitely going to be interesting seeing Cameron take on a starring role in a big blockbuster movie like Avatar 2.

Avatar 2 is scheduled for release on December 18, 2020, Avatar 3 on December 17, 2021, Avatar 4 on December 20, 2024, and Avatar 5 on December 19, 2025.
