For anime fans who are interested in new shows that aren’t shonen or isekai fantasy, NHK’s upcoming anime is definitely one to watch out for. Recently, NHK revealed that an anime adaptation of Chisato Abe’s Karasu wa Aruji wo Erabanai novel is coming next year.

This show will be the first anime project in Abe’s Yatagarasu series, and it will be released in the Spring 2024 season.

There’s no trailer for the series yet, but the announcement did come with a teaser visual that features the show’s protagonist, Yukiya.

Chisato Abe’s Yatagarasu Series Is Finally Getting the Anime Treatment

Chisato Abe is a popular writer who is known for her Yatagarasu novel series. This fantasy series is based on the eponymous yatagarasu, a mythical crow in Shinto mythology.

In the series’ story, the yatagarasu can shift between human and crow forms. These beings live in the parallel world of Yamauchi. This world has a style that’s reminiscent of Japan’s Heian era.

Currently, the novel series has two parts with multiple volumes each. The first volume is titled Karasu ni Hitoe wa Niawanai, and it got a manga adaptation that ran from 2018 to 2020.

This manga was serialized in Kodansha’s Comic Days app. Fans outside of Japan were then treated to an English-language release of the manga via the K MANGA app. On K MANGA, the series is titled A Raven for All Seasons.

The series’ second volume is Karasu wa Aruji wo Erabanai, and it has an ongoing manga adaptation. Soon, it’s also getting an anime.

Karasu wa Aruji wo Erabanai Anime Gets April 2024 Release Date

Karasu wa Aruji wo Erabanai (or The Raven Does Not Choose its Master in English) was revealed to be getting an anime adaptation in Spring 2024 by NHK, Japan’s public broadcaster.

This anime is based on the second volume, which follows Yukiya, a yatagarasu boy who is tasked to become the retainer of Nazukihiko, the imperial prince.

There’s not a lot of info yet about the anime as there’s no word yet on a cast and staff list. NHK did share the show’s first teaser visual, which features Yukiya seemingly in mid-transformation.

Interestingly, the second volume was chosen to get an anime adaptation instead of the first one. Even though it’s an unusual decision, it should still be an exciting show for fans.

The Karasu wa Aruji wo Erabanai anime will be released in April 2024. For now, there’s no word yet on a specific release date or a streaming release partner outside of Japan.
