Spongebob Squarepants is one of the longest-running kids shows on Nickelodeon, and only now is the show getting a spinoff based on a younger Spongebob.
According to Deadline, Nickelodeon has given the green light to Kamp Koral, a prequel series that focuses on a 10-year-old Spongebob as he spends his days in sleepaway camp. The show is said to have Spongebob and his friends "spend the summer building underwater campfires, catching wild jellyfish, and swimming in Lake Yuckymuck at the craziest camp in the kelp forest, Kamp Koral."
What's also interesting is, the show will forgo the traditional 2D animation of Spongebob Squarepants and will be using a CG medium. Nickelodeon's Ramsey Naito also had this to say about the show:
"SpongeBob has an incredible universe to expand upon and the green light for Kamp Koral is a testament to the strength and longevity of these characters known and loved by generations of fans around the world."
While I'm sure Sandy might not be part of the Kamp Koral, I can imagine we can get younger versions of Spongebob's friends like Patrick or Squidward. Maybe we can even have appearances from other characters like Mr. Krabs, Plankton, Mrs. Puff, or Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy.
As part of a generation that grew up watching Spongebob, I'm sure this show will have a lot of people to appeal to. If anything, it might even enhance how we enjoy the original. Then again, I'm not expecting there to be some kind of strict continuity. It's just a silly kids show.
No release date has been set for Kamp Koral, but the show is expected to start production this month.
