Following the TV anime’s first season earlier this year, Polygon Pictures announced that the new anime movie Kaina of the Great Snow Sea: Star Sage will premiere this June at France’s prestigious animation festival.
In case you missed it, this new movie was revealed recently by the studio, and it is the follow-up to the Kaina TV anime.
While it will finally premiere soon at Annecy, the film has been announced way back in January 2023.
This film should be a must-watch for fans of the TV show, as well as for followers of Tsutomu Nihei.
Iconic Manga Artist Tsutomu Nihei’s Latest Work
The Kaina of the Great Snow Sea franchise was made by Polygon Pictures in partnership with Tsutomu Nihei, the renowned manga artist who has a fairly small yet dedicated following, both in Japan and internationally.
Nihei is perhaps best known for his cyberpunk manga Blame!, which was serialized back in the late 90s to the early 2000s in the Monthly Afternoon manga magazine.
Blame! is considered as one of the best cyberpunk titles thanks to its impressive art and unique storytelling. And back in 2017, the series got an anime film adaptation that was made by Polygon Pictures and Netflix.
Aside from his signature work, Nihei also has a selection of other popular series, including Knights of Sidonia, NOiSE, and Abara (which is believed to be one of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s inspirations for Chainsaw Man).
Of these, Knights of Sidonia got the anime treatment, which was also made by Polygon Pictures.

Kaina of the Great Snow Sea: Star Sage Movie Premiere Date
The Kaina of the Great Snow Sea series is another partnership between Nihei and Polygon, though it’s one that both studio and artist worked on together.
While it’s billed as an original anime, Nihei released the manga version first back in early 2022. Then in Winter 23, the anime was finally aired on TV.
While there’s no Season 2 yet, the movie follow-up Kaina of the Great Snow Sea: Star Sage was revealed, and it will premiere this June at Annecy.
Specifically, the movie will premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 16, and it will feature English subtitles.
Given that only a few will be able to watch the premiere, the film will also get a wider release in Japan, but that’s scheduled on October 13, 2023.
Meanwhile, there’s no word yet on whether the movie will release internationally.
