Many popular mobile games get anime adaptations, but most of them are RPGs that already have an anime-inspired art style. This time, it’s a popular shooter’s turn to get adapted. That’s because Kadokawa and Garena announced that a Free Fire anime is in the works.

This upcoming anime was revealed jointly by Kadokawa and Garena earlier today, and while there aren’t a lot of details announced so far, information about its production has been shared.

While Free Fire is no stranger to the world of anime, an anime adaptation is a surprise given that it’s a battle royale instead of a gacha roleplaying game.

All You Need to Know about Garena Free Fire, the Hit Mobile Battle Royale

There are plenty of gacha games that have gotten anime adaptations over the years. For instance, there’s Arknights, which is already getting a third season.

There’s also the ongoing Blue Archive anime, along with the upcoming Genshin Impact anime by ufotable. Soon, it will be Free Fire’s turn to get an anime.

You’ll be forgiven if you’re not familiar with Free Fire. While the game is a hit battle royale shooter released back in December 2017, it’s more popular in Asia than in the West.

After all, games such as Fortnite still dominate the battle royale space in the US.

Gameplay-wise, Free Fire plays like your typical battle royale as 50 players are dropped on an island, with the last player standing emerging victorious.

Over the years, Free Fire has gotten an array of anime collaborations. For instance, there was a Demon Slayer crossover in September 2023 and an Attack on Titan collab back in February 2021.

The upcoming Free Fire anime won’t be a crossover with another existing IP as it should have its own story.

As the anime was only announced today and still has no trailer, it is still likely very early into its production. It was confirmed that the anime will be made by a Japanese studio, possibly Kadokawa’s new in-house studio.

Kadokawa also revealed that the show will feature its Chinese subsidiary Kadokawa Qingyu as the production manager.

Given that the game is a multiplayer battle royale, it’s not clear what the story of the upcoming adaptation will be.

On the flip side, the fact that it doesn’t have a major storyline should give the producers and the studio a lot of leeway to make something more creative.
