Industry analysts might have thought that Columbia was just asking for trouble releasing Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle so close to Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but the fantasy adventure comedy held up on its own when it released back in 2016.
Now, Columbia is releasing Jumanji: The Next Level, and this time it has Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker to contend with.
Speaking in an interview with CNet,The Next Level director Jake Kasdan addresses the concern that analysts have been sharing over the film releasing so close to The Rise of Skywalker.
According to the filmmaker, he isn't so concerned about competing with the new Star Wars film. Instead, Kasdan worries about whether or not he's made the best Jumanji entry that he and his team could have come up with.
"We've been living in a Hollywood world for the last several years where people want familiar brands that have name recognition," says Kasdan, "and yet there have been some problems with that program this year... Everybody's conscious of that. But from my point of view, all I can worry about is making the best Jumanji that we can come up with."
Even with Star Wars coming out in the next few weeks, we're sure that The Next Level is going to do well. The first movie was a big hit. Along with the good will that fans have for the previous movie, The Next Level also has some major star power. Not only is the film bringing back Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Karen Gillan, Kevin Heart, and Jack Black, but it's also featuring Danny DeVito and Danny Glover.
