Jujutsu Kaisen Creator Reveals Character That Reminds Him of Marvel’s Thanos

Jujutsu Kaisen creator Gege Akutami reveals that one of his characters reminds him of Marvel’s previous big baddie, Thanos (Josh Brolin). If you can remember, Thanos had the initial goal to make half of the universe disappear with the snap of his finger as he bears in his hand the infinity stones. This plan, however, goes downhill, as Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) sacrifices himself to save the lives that vanished during the Blip. Gege weighs in on why, despite the semblance, he could not hate the character.

Jujutsu is set to be released sometime in 2023 where we will be continuing the story of Yuji and his friends going after Mahito’s plans, along with the Shibuya Incident arc, which will include the entrance of a new character, Yuta Okkotsu, after his theatrical debut in the 2021 film, Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie. According to a recent exclusive French interview with the creator, Gege sees Thanos in Mahito when it comes to their evil motives, similar to that of Sukuna. Check out Gege’s full comment below:

“The principle behind Mahito is quite similar to that of Sukuna,” Gege says, as he initially said that Sukuna is not someone accepting of others’ love nor is it a part of his intention to atone for his sins, “I wanted to avoid the classic gimmick of “but deep down, he is nice.”

Clearly, Gege knows what he is doing when it comes to writing down his villainous characters. Not everything can be decided in black and white. In this case, he outrightly states Mahito is “intrinsically evil.”

“Mahito is intrinsically evil, deep down, he only thinks about making humans suffer. But can he be totally proven wrong? It reminds me of Thanos in Avengers: Endgame.” The creator then admits while the villain seeks human suffering, similar to that of Thanos wanting to vanquish the human race, the author finds himself sympathizing, perhaps. “In the end, I never felt hatred for him.”

JJK fans have long resented Mahito ever since he killed Junpei, one of the side characters who eventually became fan-favorite given his tragic high school backstory. Fortunately, given the continuation of the anime, we will soon be seeing Itadori Yuji and his friends return, and eventually avenge the death of their friend.
