Production is finally underway for the upcoming MCU series Daredevil: Born Again which will mark the return of Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio in their respective MCU roles that they originated from the former Netflix show. A lot of fans have been wondering whether other characters from the original show will also return and now we have an exciting update for one of the major roles.
The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Jon Bernthal is reprising the role of Frank Castle/The Punisher in Daredevil: Born Again. This will mark his first official MCU appearance and his comeback after starring in his own solo series The Punisher which lasted for two seasons.
There are no details yet regarding how Bernthal's The Punisher will play into the story of the new series and how many episodes will he appear in. Just like Cox and D'Onofrio's current MCU appearances, it is also unknown so far whether Bernthal's Marvel character is the same iteration as the Netflix version.
Unfortunately, the report also confirmed that two cast members from the original Daredevil series, Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page) and Elden Hensen (Foggy Nelson), will not be returning to the new MCU series and it remains unknown whether the roles will be recast with different actors instead.
Bernthal is the third cast member from the Netflix Defenders shows who is confirmed to reprise their respective role in the MCU and this is certainly exciting for fans who have been looking forward to the actor's return in the Marvel role after years of speculation on his comeback.
So far, we don't have the details yet regarding how he will connect to the story of the series and whether they will address the events of his solo series, which we last saw him. Now that the series is on Disney+, it is curious to see as well whether they will deal with the character's violent nature as the Netflix shows did.
The cast also includes Michael Gandolfini, Margarita Levieva, Sandrine Holt, and Nikki M. James. Matt Corman and Chris Ord serve as the main head writers/showrunners of the series. Filming recently started and is set to last until later this year.
