Joker: Viggo Mortensen Was Originally Approached For Thomas Wayne Role

Fans were pleasantly surprised when Alec Baldwin was announced as Thomas Wayne for the upcoming Joker movie, which has Joaquin Phoenix as the lead. It's a bit odd seeing the Waynes in an origin story for the long-time Batman villain but as long as he doesn't kill them, all should be good in the world. Interestingly enough, it looks like Baldwin was not the studio's first choice.

Jeff Sneider, who has shared plenty of movie info over the years, has revealed that Lord of the Rings star Viggo Mortensen was originally approached for the role of Thomas Wayne. It's not yet known why Mortensen passed up the role and now we'll never know how he would have been in the role.

Baldwin is far from a bad choice but we haven't seen Viggo Mortensen in a mainstream role for some time, so it would have been nice to see him again. Sure, we'll always see him as Aragorn but that doesn't mean we don't miss him.

Thomas Wayne has always been an interesting member of Batman lore, helping Gotham City be a utopia and offering plenty of great advice to Bruce before he died. How he gets involved with The Joker is going to be interesting. They could always pull from the Telltale Batman games and have Thomas be a corrupt citizen as well.

Joker is directed by Todd Phillips and is set for a release on Oct. 4, 2019.
