Joker Tracking For $100 Million Opening Weekend After Venice Film Festival Premiere

It looks like Joker might be bigger than anybody ever expected. A new report reveals that the Joaquin Phoenix film is currently tracking for a massive $100 million opening weekend following its successful premiere at the Venice Film Festival.

The report comes from Box Office Pro, which confirms that the movie's debut at the film festival made way for some major buzz. Although Joker was initially expected to bring in a modest $60 to $90 million debut, the numbers have gone up significantly. The Warner Bros. film is now predicted to have an opening range of $85 to $105 million and the opening forecast has been set at $103 million.

Interestingly, the report compares the buzz around Joker to what happened to Andy Muschietti's It two years ago. "Online chatter is embracing the hype, and our metrics now point to this clearly being the 'water cooler' type of movie that inspires interest from a variety of demographics — not unlike another creepy clown movie from Warner Bros. in September 2017," it reads.

We're not surprised considering that Joker has an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score having been certified 85% Fresh. But can an R-rated film actually bring in this much money? If Deadpool and Venom's success, there is a huge possibility it will happen. Perhaps Joker will be giving Wade Wilson a run for his money this August.

Joker premiered at the Venice Film Festival last August. It is currently scheduled for release on October 4.
