The DC Universe is embracing a different approach to its projects but unlike the Marvel Cinematic Universe where the multiverse is very much aligned, opening the door to potential crossovers, the DCU's "Elseworlds" will exist as its own entity and won't affect the franchise's shared continuity.

Speaking of the whole Elseworlds concept, the upcoming sequel to 2019's Joker is still in production despite James Gunn and Peter Safran canning multiple projects. The Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga team-up film has been generating a lot of buzz as of late, especially after director Todd Phillips unveiled our first look at the pop star's iteration of Harley Quinn.

As it stands, details surrounding Gaga's portrayal of the DC character have remained scarce but according to a hot new rumor, her version of the character will be completely different from the ones we've seen before.

Insider KC Walsh claims that Joker: Folie à Deux will be shying away from the source material and instead of presenting Harley as Joker's Psychiatrist which has always been the norm, Gaga's version of the DC anti-hero will be depicted as Arthur Fleck's peer and fellow Arkham patient.

Walsh writes: "Rumor out of #Joker2 Harley Quinn will have a slight change to her character as she is a patient n peer of Joker not his doctor in Arkham Asylum". Check it out here:

Considering it's an Elseworld story, Joker 2 easily gets a pass should it make drastic changes to Harley's origin story. I mean, the first one wasn't exactly faithful to the Clown Prince of Crime's backstory and it still worked. I have a strong feeling Phoenix and Gaga will blow everyone away and we could be looking at another box-office hit.

Joker: Folie à Deux hit cinemas on October 4, 2024
