The iconic assassin is back on screens in its latest installment: John Wick: Chapter 4, where Lionsgate has not only returned Keanu Reeves back in action, but is already making its way in breaking the franchise’s best box office record! Variety reports that John Wick 4's opening weekend earned $8.9M at the domestic box office suggests that the fourth installment is already on track to surpass its predecessor, John Wick 3, with an expected earning between $65M and $70M.
It is worth mentioning that all previous three films have substantially surpassed its predecessors on its opening weekend releases, which pins the reason behind its immense theatrical success! The first John Wick film opened with $14M back in 2014, while John Wick: Chapter 2 earned $30.4M, and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum at $56.8M. 2014’s John Wick had $950,000 in domestic previews, John Wick 2 had $2.2M, and John Wick 3 had $5.9M.

John Wick 4 cost over $100M to produce, which should already aim to beat its previous films’ records within the franchise: 2014’s John Wick ($86.1M), John Wick 2 ($174.3M), and lastly, John Wick 3 ($328.3M globally). Seeing as John Wick 4 is the only new major release this weekend, this paves the way to most likely score higher than last week’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
John Wick: Chapter 4 tells the story of Keanu Reeves’ return to take down the evil High Table crime syndicate and in order to gain his freedom, he must face Marquis Vincent de Gramont (played by Bill Skarsgard). Despite seemingly being the last installment of the franchise, there are two spinoff projects due: Ana de Armas' Ballerina and The Continental.
Given that the John Wick franchise has a history of being well-received by its audiences, there is no doubt that John Wick 4 is here to claim its price soon on taking the throne for its record-breaking box office earnings.
