There has been a huge amount of fans supporting āReylo' ever since The Force Awakens came out, and The Rise of Skywalker had sought to āgive fans what they wanted' when Rey and Ben Solo shared a kiss near the end of the film. As it turns out, this was something that director J.J. Abrams didn't want in the movie.
According to a recent leak on Reddit detailing how Disney had taken creative control from Abrams in the making of the film, Abrams was said to be against the kiss (and āReylo in general'). The move was apparently done by Disney in an attempt to please āboth sides of the fandom.'
Whether the leak was true or not, you can't help but admit that this kind of lines up with Abrams' own comments about the relationship during the press tours. He had described the relationship between the two close to being siblings, and everyone was confused as to why he would then have them kiss in this movie. Studio meddling is something way more believable than the director trying to purposely promote incest in a family-friendly film.
If you ask me, the kiss between Rey and Ben Solo really didn't feel earned. It just felt like another box that was checked off in a list that Disney had of āThings fans want to see in this film, probably.' I mean, sure the Reylo fans got what they wanted, but like this? Surely there could have been a better way.
For now, fans are calling for Disney to #ReleaseTheJJCut, but if outrage can't even get WB to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut, what are the odds that Disney, one of the largest companies on Earth, is going to budge for a bunch of angry fans?
