J.J. Abrams Justifies Divisive Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Title

Star Wars fans might still be celebrating the newly released trailer for Star Wars: Episode IX, but some are finding the film's title, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, a tad bit tacky.

While the official title ended up being a polarizing name, The Rise of Skywalker and Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams doesn't worry at all about all the controversy. Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Tonight Online, Abrams defends his decision to name Episode IX the way he did, telling fans that they'll understand once they actually get to see The Rise of Skywalker later this year.

"The title feels like it's the right title for this movie, and I know that it's provocative and asks a bunch of questions," Abrams told ET Online. "But I think when you see the movie, you'll see how it's intended, what it means."

Abrams also promises that he knows what he's doing, saying that he understands the weight of giving titles to the films in the Star Wars franchise.

"In the flow of titles, this movie had a very weird responsibility. It had to be the end of not just three movies, but nine movies, and the idea of having to incorporate the stories that have come before strangely is the story of the movie. Which is to say it's the characters in the film inheriting everything that's come before in previous generations, whether it's sins of the father, whether it's the wisdom that they've acquired. And the question is this new generation, are they up to the task, can they stand up to what they have to? And so in a way, I feel like we coming into this movie have inherited a lot, and the question is can we do it? And that question we ask ourselves every day."

Right now, a popular theory that spun out of the new title for Episode IX claims that Skywalker could actually become a new name for Jedi - something that doesn't seem entirely unlikely considering the trajectory of the Star Wars sequel trilogy.
