J.J. Abrams has done so much for the Star Wars franchise. Not only did he successfully reignite the power of the galaxy far, far away with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but the filmmaker is also closing out the entire Skywalker saga with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Seeing all that Abrams has done for the franchise, fans can't help but wonder whether the director will ever return to direct another Star Wars film after Episode IX.
Speaking in an interview with Esquire to talk about his new Star Wars movie, Abrams was asked if he would be willing to work on more projects for Star Wars. While fans might want to see the filmmaker ready and eager for the next Star Wars movie, the director reminds everyone that he just recently finished work on The Rise of Skywalker and after all the work that he's done, he's ready to take a break.
"I just yesterday finished this thing," Abrams said. "So it's a bit like asking someone at the end of a meal at French Laundry, you know if they want to get a burger. It's like, you know, I'm sure that one day having a burger would be the greatest idea in the history of time, but in this moment I'm full."
Abrams' response might disappoint fans who loved his work in The Force Awakens, but we understand that the director may want to step away from Star Wars for a while after The Rise of Skywalker. Though Lucasfilm meant for Colin Trevorrow to take charge over Episode IX, creative differences forced the project on Abrams. Not only is Abrams pressured to fix whatever mistakes Trevorrow made, but there's also the burden knowing that The Rise of Skywalker is supposed to culminate the ENTIRE Skywalker saga. That's a whole lot of pressure, really.
We wouldn't take it against Abrams for wanting a little breather after Episode IX.
