Having her mom as an inspiration, the 38-year-old asked her mother to move to Los Angeles, where she started auditioning.

Anjelica Huston cast her in the TV movie Bastard Out of Carolina, instantly earning acclaim. From there, she did Contact, Hope, and Stepmom.

In the 2000s, she started doing independent psychological thrillers, like the cult movie Donnie Darko, Life as a House, Hitler: The Rise of Evil, and Saved!

Come 2005, she joined the cast of Joe Wright's movie adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice, followed by The Ballad of jack and Rose, Into the Wild, and The Ruins.

She ventured into doing action films, such as Zack Snyer's Sucker Punch, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and its two sequel films. She then returned to doing psychological horror movies, like The Neon Demon and Nocturnal Animal.

Malone also tried making music, releasing a single, "Blood Stains," in 2007 and started performing street shows with a musical project, The Shoe, after a year.

Jena Malone Reveals Being Sexually Assaulted While Making Hunger Games

Malone admitted being sexually assaulted while making Hunger Games in a post on Tuesday, February 28.

She posted a photo after doing The Hungers Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 in 2015, with a caption revealing she was having "a swirling mix of emotions."

Though she explained that "with "a swirling mix of emotions," she said she was "going thru a bad break up and also was sexually assaulted by someone [she] had worked with" at the time.

"A swirling mix of emotions im only now just learning to sort thru," she added. "I wish it wasn't tied to such a traumatic event for me but that is the real wildness of life I I guess. How to hold the chaos with the beauty."

Malone continued that it was "hard to talk about the hunger games and [her character] Johanna Mason without feeling the sharpness of this moment in time," but she was "ready to move thru it and reclaim the joy and accomplishment I felt."

Malone and Lionsgate's rep didn't respond for comment to People's request.
