JC Lee’s Lawsuit Against Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment Dismissed

It looks like the case that Stan Lee's daughter filed against her father's former company, POW!, has been dismissed by the Central District of California.

According to a report by ComicBook.com, Judge Otis Wright II of the Central District of California has decided to dismiss J.C. Lee's lawsuit against POW! Entertainment. Lee decided to sue POW! Entertainment based on a claim that her father, Marvel comic book legend Stan Lee, had signed over Stan Lee's likeness and intellectual property in perpetuity to Stan Lee Media. Claiming herself to be a representative of Stan Lee Media, J.C. Lee wanted to fight for the rights to her father's likeness and to his intellectual property.

Unfortunately, Judge Wright didn't lean in favour for Lee, considering the case frivolous and filed with prejudice. The Judge then sanctioned Lee for the amount of $1 million and decided to hold the celebrity's legal counsel jointly and severally liable for $250,000.

"Stan Lee, a superhero in his own right, served to inspire the everyday hero," Wright wrote in his order. "The Court urges parties to treat his legacy with respect and cease engaging in meritless litigation."

Posting a statement after the case ruling, POW! decided to celebrate the sanction of the court.

We feel vindicated by the Court's decision today," said POW! in a statement. "Stan purposefully created POW! eighteen years ago with me as a place to safeguard his life's work. Before he passed, Stan was adamant that POW! continue to protect his creations and his identity after he was gone, because he trusted that we would safeguard his legacy for generations to come. We promised Stan that POW! would respect and honor his wishes, and that's exactly what we are going to do. We are happy to finally put this ugly litigation behind us and move on to preserving the legacy of this great man and developing the large inventory of intellectual property he left behind. POW!'s commitment to honor and preserve Stan Lee's legacy has not and will not waver."

It's terrible how there's been a lot of squabble over Stan Lee's legacy. Then again, there's a lot of money in the comic book legend's intellectual property.

Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to begin when Black Widow premieres on November 6.
