Jared Leto To Return As The Joker In Suicide Squad 2 And Gotham City Sirens

Warner Bros. might be working on a standalone origin movie for The Joker, but that doesn't mean that the studio is axing Jared Leto from the DC Extended Universe.

Yesterday, word came out that Warner Bros. had actually started developing The Joker, a standalone origin movie for The Dark Knights nemesis with Martin Scorses as the film's producer. While the news that the studio wanted to bring a "a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-'80s Gotham City that isn't meant to feel like a DC movie" to the big screen excited a number of DC fans, others began to wonder what this meant for Leto, the DCEU Joker first introduced in Suicide Squad.

Though Warner Bros. could also replace Leto, Deadline's report on The Joker asserts that Leto will remain as the DCEU's version of the Crown Prince of Crime. Sure the studio might be working on a new origin film that might require a younger version of Joker, however the film is to be set outside of the DCEU.

DC Entertainment can't have a crime film in the DCEU – it would clash with the tone of the burgeoning superhero franchise. Still, it's exciting to see Warner Bros. planning for the longhaul, stockpiling superhero movies inside and outside of the DCEU for fans to enjoy.

The Joker is currently in its early stages of production and does not have its release date as of yet.
