I've always believed that it's criminal how James Gunn doesn't get enough credit for his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe when fans should be celebrating him the way they celebrate the likes of the Russo Brothers. The director is responsible for bringing together Marvel's D-list heroes and making it work on the big screen despite the fact that casual fans have no clue about them. Marvel Studios' gamble paid off big time and the Guardians of the Galaxy films would become a hit amongst fans of the billion-dollar franchise.
Now, Gunn is set to helm the third Guardians film but his days in the Marvel Cinematic Universe may actually be numbered as the director himself revealed his plans of ending his tenure in the franchise after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Responding to a fan on Twitter who asked if there are any plans of doing a fourth sequel, Gunn simply said that he intends for the upcoming MCU project to be his last.
It's worth noting that Gunn recently expressed his desire to "retire" from filmmaking and focus on doing TV shows, an idea that appealed to him so much especially after working on HBO Max's The Suicide Squad spinoff series Peacemaker. Of course, it's still a little too early to tell whether or not Gunn fulfills his plans but if Volume 3 does end up becoming his last film in the MCU, I'd be so bummed out.
On the other hand, I totally understand where Gunn is coming from a creative standpoint and as a director, he clearly doesn't want to get contained inside a box. That's not to say though that other opportunities inside the MCU don't await him because right after Guardians, he could easily take on other Marvel projects although I'm assuming that's not part of his agenda.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit cinemas in May 2023.
