James Gunn Reacts To Francis Ford Coppola 'Despicable' Comments About Marvel Films

We already know that James Gunn is someone who takes pride in the films he has worked on. After all, the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director was quick to react when Martin Scorsese claimed that Marvel films are "not cinema." So it's no surprise that Gunn has once again spoken up now that Francis Ford Coppola is calling Marvel Cinematic Universe movies "despicable."

Gunn took to his official Instagram account and posted a lengthy reaction to what the director of The Godfather said about Marvel films. Take a look at his post below.

"Many of our grandfathers thought all gangster movies were the same, often calling them 'despicable'. Some of our great grandfathers thought the same of westerns, and believed the films of John Ford, Sam Peckinpah, and Sergio Leone were all exactly the same," Gunn wrote. He then shared a story about how a family member reacted to his love for Star Wars.

"I remember a great uncle to whom I was raving about Star Wars. He responded by saying, 'I saw that when it was called 2001, and, boy, was it boring!'" he wrote.

Gunn went on to explain what comic book heroes truly are and that not everyone could truly appreciate them.

"Superheroes are simply today's gangsters/cowboys/outer space adventurers. Some superhero films are awful, some are beautiful. Like westerns and gangster movies (and before that, just MOVIES), not everyone will be able to appreciate them, even some geniuses. And that's okay," he concluded.

It's a dignified response to Coppola's scathing remarks where he claimed that Scorsese was being kind with his comments. "He didn't say it's despicable, which I just say it is," Coppola said. In the end, Gunn's answer proves that everyone is entitled to their own opinion but that doesn't mean it's the only opinion that matters.

Gunn is currently working on The Suicide Squad and is expected to begin work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as soon as his other project is completed.
