Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is reportedly in talks to write and direct Suicide Squad 2 for DC Films and Warner Bros. Picture.
According to The Wrap, insiders reported that Gunn is being considered to helm the sequel to David Ayer's 2016 film. Suicide Squad 2 is one of DCEU's projects in the works but the studio hasn't officially announced a director yet.
This is a surprising decision for fans of Guardians of the Galaxy. Earlier this year, Gunn was fired from Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy franchise after online critics found years-old tweets in which he joked about pedophilia and raped. Gunn already apologized for those jokes.
The script for Suicide Squad 2 is being finalized, and according to co-write Todd Stashwick, the script came together nicely. However, if Gunn is hired to write the sequel, it's likely that the filmmaker will be tasked to make an entirely new script.
The first Suicide Squad film, which starred Will Smith and Margot Robbie, earned nearly $750 million worldwide.
