James Gunn Gets Honest If Future Marvel Movies Can Top Avengers: Endgame

Whether you are a DC or Marvel fan, everyone would have to agree that Avengers: Endgame forever altered the superhero cinematic experience when it got released in theaters in 2019. To this date, it probably remains the number one superhero film that ticks off all the boxes of competency when it comes to great cinematography, ensemble, and narrative, despite the saddening deaths of some of the beloved Avengers. Since it premiered, the MCU has struggled to keep up with its releases, given Phases 4 and 5's underwhelming performances.

Before he jumped ship to DC Studios, James Gunn had written, directed, and produced a few memorable Marvel outings, most notably the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. Given that Vol. 3 is set to be released next month, the Peacemaker creator recently weighed in on how it was somehow easy for him to make the Guardians films given that the story functions outside the Blip, which pertains to the climax of Avengers: Infinity War when Thanos, wiped off half of the universe's population. The vanished population reappeared at the end of Avengers: Endgame and every subsequent Marvel film and television series have had to deal with the fallout.

“I really want Marvel to keep making good movies,” Gunn told Variety. “I think it’s really hard in the wake of the Blip. There’s this worldwide, universe-wide event that happened. And in truth, everybody would be stark raving mad at this point. So it’s hard to write stories in the wake of that. Which is why the ‘Guardians’ movies have been easier because they’re set outside of that a little bit.”

MCU fans took to Reddit to share their thoughts on the writer-director’s statement. “I kinda wish phase 4 was a complete reset for the most part. If they wanted to do multiverse it feels like they went too big too fast and haven’t found it easy to bring it all together at all … Right now it just feels like an absolute mess, and it is hard to keep up with who is where and who knows who and what the multiverse even means.” wrote user KeyWit.

Meanwhile, according to Redditor PoofLightsSexy, “Marvel really tried to move away from the blip too soon. They touched on it, and some stories came from it, but they really wanted to move on to the next phase. Some great storytelling could have been done that could have led to things like Kang and the multiverse saga. I don’t know, let’s see what Feige and team are up to, sounds like some course correction is taking place.”

As of the moment, Gunn is revamping the DC universe, while Marvel is trying to regain its glory with future projects underway.
