I think we can all agree that the Guardians of the Galaxy have already solidified themselves as the Marvel Cinematic Universe's top cosmic heroes which is absolutely astonishing, especially considering they started out as D-list characters in the comics. That said, director James Gunn still thinks some of the members of the beloved superhero team have not been given much attention by Marvel Studios.

If you'd ask the DC Studios co-chief, he believes that Drax and Mantis deserve more focus and it was a conscious effort on his part to make them the highlight of the much-raved-about The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

Speaking with Phase Zero, Gunn discussed Drax and Mantis' "unique" relationship while claiming that the beloved GOTG members have long been sidelined by the studio. He explains: "Well, I think that it’s the end of the trilogy for all of the Guardians, really. So, it’s not just Drax. But, I think that especially, I love the relationship between Mantis and Drax. I think it’s such a unique relationship and they really are kind of like Abbott and Costello, but both are Costello’s. But Drax is such an enormous Costello that he outweighs her Costello-ness. But I love the two of them… I wanted to be able to put them at the center of the story as opposed to on the sidelines."

Gunn added that both characters hadn't been used to their full potential. "I think both of them have, in the past few movies that weren’t Guardians movies, have been incredibly sidelined, haven’t been utilized so much. And so being able to really tell their story and put their journey at the middle of this was important to me."
