James Gunn Continues to Shoot Down Marvel-DC Rivalry: "It's Just Not the Truth"

For several decades, there has been a perception among fans that Marvel and DC have a rivalry. While it might ring true in the past, today, that seems to be absent since several key figures of both companies appear to be friendly with each other despite the competition.

The most notable example of this situation is James Gunn, who is currently promoting the MCU film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 while co-heading DC Studios where he is also working on the pre-production of the first DCU film Superman: Legacy.

Speaking recently with Yahoo Entertainment, Gunn was asked again about his thoughts regarding the perceived rivalry between Marvel and DC as someone who is currently involved in both franchises until he's done with his duty for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Once again, the director shot down the perception of the rivalry and believes that it is "not odd" for him to be involved in two comic book franchises at the same time.

"It's not odd. It isn't odd at all, not to me. I understand how it appears, but I'm just busy cause I'm working two jobs at one time. But it's not odd," he said.

Gunn also believes that the perceived rivalry between the two franchises by fans is being overblown and continued to iterate his previous stances that having the two comic book franchises co-exist is good for both businesses.

"People have this weird belief that Marvel and DC hate each other or somehow are polar opposites. But it's just not the truth. I mean, listen, man, our job is the same. We want to get people into the theaters to see movies," he explained.

"That's what matters. And I think that we work together to do that. And the more good Marvel movies are, the better it is for DC movies. The more good DC movies, the better it is for Marvel movies."

The DC Studios co-chairman also used a sports analogy to better explain his situation where he compared it to batting for the Red Sox while managing the Yankees.

"There's not only one winner. There can be two winners because it matters who goes to see your movies and who enjoys 'em," he said.

Once again, Gunn made another great point about the perceived rivalry between the two comic book franchises and, as he astutely explained, having them co-exist will always be good for the theatrical business since it will make the audience come to theaters often.

Obviously, there is still going to be competition between the two, but unlike the old days, it is now more friendlier and a lot of the general audience is also starting to embrace both without putting them against each other.
