James Gunn Confirms WB Offering Him Superman Movie

Earlier this year, there were rumors going around saying that Warner Brothers had offered Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn the chance at directing a Superman movie for the DC Extended Universe.

It looks like those rumors were actually true. The filmmaker recently went on an question answer segment with fans on Instagram, and during the little session Gunn was asked whether he would ever accept an offer from Warner Brothers to work on a Man of Steel movie for the DCEU. According to Gunn, DC had actually offered him the chance to work on whatever movie he wanted to do, and that included a Superman movie for the DCEU. However, Gunn wanted to work on a Suicide Squad movie instead, explaining that it's always been one of his favorite properties.

"As has been reported many times DC offered me whatever film I wanted to do, including some sort of Superman movie (not specifically Man of Steel 2 as I've seen reported)," the director replied (via Cosmic Book News). "I chose The Suicide Squad as it's one of my favorite properties in the world. It's the story I wanted to tell more than any other."

Warner Brothers approached Gunn after the director had been fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after a smear campaign created by an alt-right extremist. It's interesting to know that the studio had offered the filmmaker a pick of projects, including a Superman movie. We would love to know whether this Superman movie still involved Henry Cavill or whether Warner Brothers wanted a different actor for the project.

Suicide Squad is set for release on August 6, 2021.
