The new DC Universe's first big-screen project, Superman: Legacy now has its director. Last week, DC Comics writer Tom King revealed that James Gunn is pulling double duty with the project that is set to explore the early days of Clark Kent as a correspondent on The Daily Planet. Now, nearly a week following the comic book icon's revelation, the DC Studios co-head finally breaks his silence on his role.

On Twitter, Gunn officially confirmed that not only is he penning the script for Superman: Legacy, but he will also serve as the project's director. He wrote: "Yes, I’m directing Superman: Legacy to be released on July 11, 2025. My brother Matt told me when he saw the release date he started to cry. I asked him why. He said, “Dude, it’s Dad’s birthday.” I hadn’t realized."

He also explained his decision to accept the project despite his initial hesitance. "It has been a long road to this point. I was offered Superman years ago - I initially said no because I didn’t have a way in that felt unique and fun and emotional that gave Superman the dignity he deserved."

Gunn also shared that it wasn't until last year that he was convinced to do the project and now, he is also set to direct. Check out the full thread here:

Say what you will about this decision but personally, I like the idea of the DCU revolving around the same set of creatives as it allows more cohesiveness and consistency content-wise. Hopefully, they are going the route.

Now, those who are doubting Gunn's capabilities to oversee a Superman project, lest we forget that he's one of the biggest comic book junkies out there, and over the last decade, he's proven that he knows his stuff so yeah, there's nothing to worry about.

Superman: Legacy is currently scheduled for theatrical release on July 11, 2025.
