It goes without saying that James Gunn's entry to the DC Extended Universe has done wonders for the franchise so far. With only two projects under his belt, fans are incredibly stoked for what the Guardians of the Galaxy director has in store in the future. As it stands, Gunn is gearing up for the second season of Peacemaker which begins filming next year, but it's also safe to assume that a sequel to 2021's The Suicide Squad could also be on his slate.

Well, a recent report from Geekosity's Mikey Sutton seems to suggest that Gunn is out of the picture for the next Suicide Squad movie. According to Sutton, Warner Bros. Discovery is looking to tap David Ayer to helm the next film which is reportedly being treated as a third film, meaning Gunn's version is still considered canon.

Intriguingly, Ayer's rumored The Suicide Squad 3 will reportedly be led by the returning Will Smith and it won't follow the story of Gunn's version of the film.

When a fan asked the Marvel and DC director to give some clarity to the report, Gunn quickly dismissed it and said none of it is real. Check out his response below:

Of course, a lot of you are aware of the ongoing fan movement demanding WB to release David Ayer's version of the 2016 version of Suicide Squad but as it stands, the studio has no plans of pulling a Snyder Cut anytime soon. While it's a shame that we'll likely never going to see Ayer's "true" cut of the film, I think most of us can agree that Gunn has done an exceptional job thus far.

James Gunn's The Suicide Squad is available to stream on HBO Max.
