James Cameron’s Avatar Sequel has Halted Production as Well

James Cameron was ready to stand up to Avengers: Endgame with his sequel to Avatar, and while the movie had been going swimmingly with production, it looks like the Coronavirus Outbreak has finally caught up.

Talking to the NZ Herald, producer Jon Landau had confirmed:

"We've delayed it. We had plans to come down Friday night with a group of people and start back up and we made the decision to hold off and continue working here [Los Angeles], and come down there a little bit later than we'd planned."

As of now, the production has been delayed indefinitely, but we are probably going to get an update the moment the tide starts to turn for the Coronavirus—that is, if the tide turns. For now, Landau says, "We're in the midst of a global crisis and this is not about the film industry. I think everybody needs to do now whatever we can do, as we say here, to flatten the [coronavirus] curve."

With the Avatar sequel expected to be special effects heavy, I guess it's best for the production to focus on what they can remotely. Then again, with a release set for 2021, I don't think Avatar 2 is in any real rush. At this point, I have a feeling that the elements they were planning to shoot in New Zealand were for the other sequels that would follow after the second movie.

Then again, that's just my guess.

For now, the first sequel to Avatar is set to come out Dec. 17, 2021.
