James Cameron Has Surprising Opinion About the Thanos Debate

Thanos is arguably one of the best villains in the MCU. Not only because Josh Brolin gave a fantastic performance as the character, but his motivations were clear and even relatable to some of the audience regarding his views on overpopulation despite his genocidal action.

Since the release of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, there have been debates about whether Thanos was actually right in his views regarding the solution to overpopulation and whether his action did save the universe even though half of all life disappeared.

Speaking with Time, Avatar: The Way of Water director James Cameron chimed in on the debate and revealed that he actually sides with Thanos regarding his solution to overpopulation and environmental problems worldwide.

"I can relate to Thanos. I thought he had a pretty viable answer. The problem is nobody is going to put up their hand to volunteer to be the half that has to go," he said.

As we all know, Cameron's Avatar films are allegorical to the current situation regarding the environment, particularly the marine ecological threats (at least recently in The Way of Water) so it is not surprising to hear the blockbuster director's opinion on the Thanos debate and understand his views that were presented in the Avengers films.

However, it is surprising to hear him chime in positively regarding the MCU especially since he's been critical of the movies in the franchise in the past couple of years. It is proof that there are still elements that the director admires in the MCU films despite his criticisms.

Cameron is still ruling the box office right now as he has two films showing at the same time in theaters with Avatar: The Way of Water and the re-release of Titanic for its 25th anniversary. Recently, the former replaced the latter as the third-highest-grossing film of all time.
