Sophia Lillis may have come out as the darling of the new IT movies, and she looks to be adding another horror film in her resume with the upcoming Gretel & Hansel. Just in, we have a new trailer for the horror film, and it features some ghoulish sights and ghastly cannibalism.
Here's the synopsis:
A long time ago in a distant fairy tale countryside, a young girl leads her little brother into a dark wood in desperate search of food and work, only to stumble upon a nexus of terrifying evil.
The movie comes from director Oz Perkins, and though he doesn't have that much under his belt, you can check out his Netflix Original film, I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House. The movie didn't get great reviews, but if you ask me, the look and feel is very distinct. I guess you can say the same thing about now-acclaimed horror director Ari Aster; Midsommar wasn't my cup of tea when it came to story, but boy was the film an experience.
Honestly I'm tired of gritty, horror retellings of fairy tales, but you can always appreciate how they try to mix things up a bit. By the looks of it, they're going to make Gretel some kind of inheritor to some kind of witch legacy, and I guess that's something we've seen before. Hopefully this film manages to impress more since it's actually coming out in theaters.
Catch Gretel & Hansel when it comes out Jan. 31.
