Before we get to why Itadori said he is like Mahito, let’s get a quick refresher on this battle from the Shibuya Incident arc.

The fight unfolds at Shibuya Station and extends across the entirety of Shibuya during the later phases of the arc.

After Mahito inflicted fatal wounds on Nobara Kugisaki, Itadori’s determination crumbled as he witnessed his friend perish before his eyes.

Mahito further devastates Itadori by relentlessly pummeling the sorcerer’s body into the ground, leaving him badly defeated both mentally and physically in both regards.

However, Aoi Todo comes to the rescue of his best friend, firmly convinced that they will be victorious.

Itadori and Todo engage in a fierce battle, and the trio even reach 120% of their latent potential.

As the battle nears its end, Mahito realizes that Itadori and Todo are almost unbeatable. Impulsively, Mahito chooses to utilize a technique he observed Satoru Gojo use.

Mahito determines to go all-in and triggers a Domain Expansion lasting a mere 0.2 seconds.

At one point, Mahito even activates his true soul and transforms into this other beastly being.

Itadori confronts Mahito after the former uses his Divergent Fist and takes Mahito by surprise. Having suffered significant damage to his soul, Mahito returns to his original form.

Despite his efforts to produce more transfigured humans through vomiting, he finds himself completely depleted.

Itadori approaches Mahito and acknowledges that the cursed spirit was correct in their last conversation.

Itadori then says “I’m you” to Mahito. He adds that he wanted to reject the cursed spirit.

Itadori goes on to confess that he wanted to pretend that he didn’t understand what he said.

However, things are different now, and he just wants to kill him. For Itadori, eliminating curses is as instinctive as Mahito’s drive to kill humans.

Initially, Itadori thought he was exorcising curses for the greater good, seeking purpose in his actions.

At that moment, he realizes there might be no underlying reason for him being exactly like Mahito.

Itadori resolves to continue slaying curses without hesitation and is comfortable allowing history to shape the justification for his killing of curses.
