XO, Kitty is a spinoff series based on the series creator Jenny Han’s best-selling novel series, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before.
The spinoff follows Kitty Song Covey, the younger sister of Lara Jean, in which Kitty tries to venture off to KISS where she could spend more time with her long-distance boyfriend, Dae.
However, the spinoff takes a turnaround once a key character gets introduced with a hint of being a part of the LGBTQ+ community.
Now, as you progress through the show, you’ll realize that this is not only one character’s identity — but a lot for them.
What Makes XO, Kitty LGBTQ+ Themed?
The fact that Kitty had to move from Portland to one of the most conservative Asian countries is a big deal explored in the Netflix series.
Aside from having to adjust that acing her subjects in the U.S. did not earn her the same merit in Korea, Kitty had to dial down on leading her friends to their potential romances.
In this case, those who feel belong in the LGBTQ+ community.
While South Korea is gradually becoming open to the LGBTQ+ rights, it admittedly remains to be one of the most difficult discussions to hold, especially when it comes to protecting your reputation to the public eye.
Kitty might be half-Korean, but it doesn’t change the fact that she grew up in a different environment, one that is Western and allowed her to freely be who she wants to be.
Though XO, Kitty is not dominantly about LGBTQ+ representation, it does play into its central storyline for some key characters on the show.
There are plenty of characters who had to hide in the closet from their own parents, while others date who they wish to date, regardless of what others might think.

Which Characters Are LGBTQ+ In XO, Kitty?
The first prominent character we are introduced to being part of the LGBTQ+ community is Yuri Han.
Yuri is seen always busying herself texting a person she has saved on her contacts as ‘Baby.’
She tried to keep it a secret for a while as to who this ‘Baby’ might be. As it turns out, it was Juliana, her best friend/girlfriend she’s trying to hide from the public eye and her conservative parents.
Juliana (Regan Aliyah) is the second named LGBTQ+ character on the show, as she gets sent away to Oakham once her parents found out about the rumors of being intimate with Yuri.
The next LGBTQ+ character we encounter is none other than Q (Anthony Keyvan), who is openly gay, but is not the type to flaunt it.
This was revealed when Kitty was looking for a lunch buddy at the cafeteria and little did she know, from her matchmaking skills, she instantly discovered Q had a thing for Florian (Theo Augier).
Of course, this only means that Florian, too, is gay for Q as he returns his feelings for Dae’s friend. Soon, the two began dating each other exclusively.
Last but not least, Kitty herself is a part of the LGBTQ+ team!
It started on Episode 6 when she found herself drunk at a party and Yuri kept acting nice towards her in an attempt to sober her up.
While this initial attraction Kitty found herself in with Yuri, this turned into a sex dream where she had almost made out with her frenemy.
Just before the series ends, Kitty discovers she has lost her love for Dae, found out she started liking Yuri, and all in all, revealing she is bisexual.
