True Detective is an anthology crime-drama that follows a self-contained narrative with each season. Created by Nic Pizzolatto, the first season debuted with the best rating ever. Because of this, the second and third seasons had a hard time living up to the expectations set by the first season.

With the release of True Detective Season 4, the show brings Jodie Foster and Kail Reis together as the lead characters of the show. They investigate a mass murder that has something to do with Arctic tribes.

As a whole, the show is not related to each other. Every season has a different set of characters and storyline. But one thing to note about True Detective Season 4 is that it pays tribute to the first season via easter eggs.

But while the two seasons aren't connected, it's possible that season 4 may be connected to an old case.

In just the first episode, the story sets the stage for a gripping mystery. Season 4 deals with the mysterious disappearance of researchers, only to be found frozen in snow.

The series brings back the crooked spirals from True Detective Season 3, which are, again, carved into the foreheads of the missing researchers. This spiral was also found on the victim's body from the first episode of True Detective Season 1.

While the two seasons aren't directly connected, the Season 4 killer could be part of the Yellow King's cult from Season 1.

It could be the cold setting of True Detective Season 4, which adds an eerie vibe to it, that makes this season seem supernatural. But if you ask us, we'd definitely point to the ghostly woman who points Rose (played by Fiona Shaw) toward the dead bodies.

Plus, there's the "She's awake" line that gives goosebumps in the first episode alone.

While True Detective Season 4 is still a crime drama, we can't help but feel like it is leading towards the supernatural. But as for fans of the series, they are pleased with the direction that the new writer, Issa López, has brought the show to.

So is True Detective Season 4 supernatural? At this point, it looks like it could be. But we'll have to wait until the show further explores the Inuit indigenous folklore being hinted at in the trailer.

One thing's for sure, it's not for those who scare easily.
